Founded in 2025, Omagua is a grassroots association in Munich, Germany, dedicated to rethinking our relationship with the planet and each other. Born out of a shared desire for ecological balance and social justice, Omagua connects people who believe that a sustainable future can only come from collaboration, equity, and a deep respect for nature.

We stand for degrowth—an intentional shift away from systems that prioritize endless economic growth at the expense of people and the planet—and work to create spaces where innovative ideas, diverse voices, and meaningful action come together.

Our vision

We envision a world where the health of the planet and its people is prioritized over profit and unchecked consumption. In this world, communities thrive through solidarity, mutual care, and collaboration. We see economies that are built to support resilience, foster social equity, and respect the ecological limits of our shared environment.

At Omagua, we are committed to working toward a future where decisions at every level—whether personal, societal, or political—are guided by sustainability, justice, and care for the planet and its inhabitants. We believe in a future where growth is no longer measured by consumption but by well-being, resilience, and the flourishing of both people and the Earth.

To inspire and support a global movement that prioritizes ecological health, community well-being, and equity over profit and consumption.

  • We believe that meaningful change begins with empowered individuals and communities. Omagua envisions creating spaces where people can come together—locally and globally—to learn from each other and collaborate on sustainable initiatives. These spaces will encourage the exchange of ideas and practical solutions aimed at addressing environmental and social challenges. Our work will focus on fostering a sense of collective agency, allowing communities to take ownership of projects that promote sustainability and ecological justice.

  • Education is key to shifting mindsets and inspiring action. Omagua envisions providing accessible resources, workshops, and educational content that help people understand the systems that harm our planet and how they can challenge these systems. We aim to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools to embrace regenerative practices and advocate for degrowth principles. Our focus will be on creating educational opportunities that foster critical thinking, inspire action, and equip people to become active participants in the global movement for sustainability.

  • At Omagua, we are committed to ensuring that the voices of marginalized and underrepresented communities—especially Indigenous groups—are amplified within the sustainability movement. We aim to highlight the insights and solutions offered by those often left out of mainstream discussions. Through advocacy, we strive to ensure that sustainability efforts are truly inclusive and reflective of the diversity of experiences and knowledge across the globe. Our work will focus on amplifying voices that advocate for social and environmental justice, and on pushing for policies that prioritize equity, sustainability, and ecological preservation.

  • We recognize that for sustainability to thrive, theory must meet practice. Omagua seeks to create spaces for sharing both research and actionable solutions that promote degrowth and regenerative practices. By connecting academic knowledge with grassroots initiatives, we envision creating opportunities for collaboration that translate theoretical insights into real-world change. Through events, publications, and partnerships, we will aim to bridge the gap between research and practice, ensuring that sustainable ideas and practices are accessible and effective for communities, organizations, and individuals alike.

The name "Omagua" embodies the ethos and vision of our movement. It pays homage to the Omagua people, indigenous stewards of the Amazon rainforest in regions of present-day Peru and Brazil. Known for their profound understanding of ecological systems and their ability to thrive in harmony with their environment, the Omagua exemplify the principles of sustainability that guide our work.

The Omagua's practices—rooted in respect for nature and an intricate balance between human activity and the ecosystem—serve as a powerful reminder of what is possible when communities prioritize stewardship over exploitation. By adopting their name, we honor their enduring legacy and draw inspiration from their wisdom, seeking to embed their values in our advocacy for sustainability through degrowth.

We reflect the Omagua people's commitment to preserving ecological integrity while fostering resilience, a lesson of increasing relevance as we face global environmental challenges. Through our work, we aim to emulate their vision, championing balance and interconnectedness as essential to a sustainable future.
